Dr. Gaalwsyk is a Minnesota native, originally from Duluth. He completed his undergrad and Medical school at UMD and moved west to Seattle to do his Residency at Swedish Medical Center - First Hill, with areas of concentration in Obstetrics, Global, and Wilderness Medicine. Upon graduation from residency in 2013, he worked part time for a year in Seattle splitting responsibilities between the clinic and being a faculty preceptorship for two residencies. His other time was spent working as an ER and Hospitalist physician at an Indian Health Service Hospital in rural Alaska. In 2014, Dr. Gaalswyk married his wife, Christina, and moved back home (for him), to Duluth, MN to complete an OB/Proceduralist Fellowship. The year-long fellowship provided him with further training in caring for high-risk pregnancies, c-section procedures, and allowed for more focused training in ER, ICU, Dermatology, Sports Medicine, Pediatrics, and Cardiology areas. Dr. Gaalswyk believes that after leaving his fellowship he has more expertise in clinic and hospital procedures that he plans to carry forward into his practice in Mora. Upon completion of his fellowship, he and his wife moved to Kijabe, Kenya, where he taught Kenyan medical residents c-section techniques and helped managed their very busy maternity and hospital wards.
Ryan and his wife are looking to become more settled and are excited to join the team at First Light.
In Dr. Gaalswyk's spare time, he loves spending quality time with his wonderful wife, Christina, running with their dog, competing against her in triathlons, doing and watching a multitude of sports, and casting a line into a quiet lake or drawing back an arrow at a deer in the woods. Ryan and his wife love to travel the world and hope to continue traveling in the future.
